If you didn't know that Hey Monday was supported by Fall Out Boy, it wouldn't be hard to figure out. It's obvious that Hey Monday took inspiration FOB, and Avril Lavigne. But, Hey Monday does have differences. The vocals of Cassadee Pope, while similar to Avril's, are better. She's got a solid voice that can really belt out. Aside from her voice, nothing really sets the band apart.
The first four songs are the same tempo. Listeners get a break with “Candles”, which is well-written, and beautiful. This is when I noticed Pope's voice. The rest of the album is filled with generic, mainstream songs. The album ends with “6 Months”, I was surprised at what a good, quality song it was. A well-written acoustic song that takes advantage of Pope's voice and writing skills, ends the album on a good note.
Hey Monday isn't dramatically different from what's dominating the pop-punk scene now, but they've got the potential to get radio-play with their mainstream sound, and strong, consistent vocals. With FOB behind them, it's only a matter of time before they “Hold On Tight” to a Billboard 100 song slot.
