I See Stars certainly knows how to play for the times. While mainstream radio floods with auto-tuned rap artists and overdubbed starlets, the band’s debut LP entitled 3D acquaints studio electronics with raw hardcore rudiments, producing an eleven-track album that adds a little more sweat and celebration to hardcore dancing. To a great extent, the record’s experimental electronica-hardcore blend provides a fresh interpretation of the two genres. Tracks like “3D” and “The Big Bad Wolf” accentuate the band’s ability to flow seamlessly from catchy dance beats and Devin Oliver’s elastic vocals to heavy guitar riffs accompanied by the airy, soul-hollowing screams of keyboardist Chris Moore. What’s more, I See Stars has seemed to find a respectable way to incorporate noticeable studio effects to their sound without completely losing their musicianship. When the album reaches a fully auto-tuned track like “Sing This!” (which could easily be played in a Hollywood nightclub) the band has already riffled through eight solid tracks that exemplify their musical strength. If anything, 3D may be too much sound; at times it becomes overwhelming. Still, 3D has an artistic direction and demonstrates the enormous potential of the very young and very talented I See Stars.
