The Summer Set has made it a long way. They’ve gone from appearing on a free CD given away in AP to drawing crowds on the AP tour, but they’ve managed to stay true to their upbeat, youthful, energetic sound. On A Love Like This, the band has firmly planted themselves on the pop side of the alternative spectrum. Songs about being young, in love, and living life to the fullest make the album relatable. While their slower songs aren’t near as fun, one is still saved by the dulcet voice of Dia Frampton. It’s true that you catch more flies with honey, and they have proved that rule true by using it to their full advantage with their sugary-sweet sound. So sweet that singer Brian Dales’ voice seems too innocent for some of the lyrics. He doesn’t come across as capable of “I’m gonna sleep with all your friends,” or “you just don’t know how low I can go,” (The Boys You Do (Get Back at You)). But for the Summer Set, being so sweet isn’t such a bad thing. They’re able to pull it off because, let’s be honest, everybody likes a little candy once in a while.
