FOE Exclusive: Jimmy Eat World "Invented" Track by Track

You guys, we were just sent an EXCLUSIVE track by track explanation of every song on the new Jimmy Eat World record, Invented. This is kind of the coolest thing ever. Want to know what "Coffee & Cigarettes" is all about? Here's your chance, and if you haven't done so already download Invented on iTunes

Heart is hard to find
This one was kind of tricky because we kept going for a different type of feel. We thought the song would be great if we could make it just one crescendo. In the end, a more dynamic approach seemed to work better. Sometimes you have to be willing to throw out the “cool idea” to get the song to work.

My best theory
Basically, I feel like I can have a better conversation about morality with the people most railed against as immoral.

Evidence
Song about going through a break up with someone you live with.

Higher devotion
Another sign we use to tell us we are on the right track is when we are conflicted if an idea sounds too much “not like us”.

Movielike
Fuck it, maybe this time I won’t be here when you get back, either.

Coffee and cigarettes
I can’t stand the grateful dead. But, I just really thought the character in this song would have one of their bootlegs as they drove across country looking for something new.

Stop
Song about jealousy. Our old buddy Rachel Hayden makes a guest vocal spot.

Littlething
Making this record was great. We decided to work out of our practice space in Arizona. Most of the record’s main vocal is from the first time I wrote the lyics. Writing, demo-ing and recording are now the same thing for us.

Cut
This is in a way the female perspective of the male perspective of “invented” the song.

Action needs an audience
Tom Linton, our other guitar player/singer sings main vocal on this. I actually had lyrics to it first but wasn’t happy with them. Tom stepped in and decided to try it.

Invented
A person who is playing off their lack of success by defining themselves as the perpetual underdog.

Mixtape
Tried this many different ways. A little of each ended up being what worked.
