As many know, This Century's debut album, Sound Of Fire, is available now via Action Theory Records. The band were nice enough to write out a track-by-track guide for us at Common Revolt, behind every track. Read below to learn more about the album, and be sure to check it out on iTunes now!
Young and Useless - all we had was the beginning guitar riff at first. The lyrics were inspired by a news article about a Spanish beauty queen who had been caught up in a drug smuggling nightmare (completely true.) From there the song came together rather quickly. There were about five or six different choruses that we tried until we committed to the final one. We always knew that it was going to be the first track on the record. It felt so different from songs we had written previously.
Sound of Fire - This song was the one that made us feel as though we were finally ready to make a record. It started off as a much punkier number with a quicker tempo. Most of the song came together around the intro guitar riff. We laid out the song structure and recorded the skeleton. Then Joel, our producer Tim and I took turns improvising the verses. The chorus came from a line that Joel started “you are the sound of fire burning up the night” and then we ran with that. We really liked the idea of a story where you were sitting on the sidelines dreaming of this picture perfect girl.
Hopeful Romantic - All we had going in to this song was the idea for the chorus which originally sang “hopeful romantic I don’t ever wanna be alone, hopeful romantic I don’t every wanna let you go.” Everything about this song felt as though it was in a million pieces until we had the intro guitar riff that ran through the verse. It worked as a great counter melody to Joel’s part. There was something about this song that always felt exciting even after listening to it so many times in the studio. It had this dreamy vibe that we really liked.
Everywhere, Everything - One of the first songs that we had for the record. Wrote it while out in Malibu after a cab ride from hell. After venting for a bit, this song was written. The whole thing came together in about 10 minutes with very minimal changes from the demo to the final version.
To Love and Back - We had been playing this song for a long time after we released it on our EP back in 09…There were certain parts of the song that didn’t necessarily feel complete. For this version of the song there’s a different bridge from the original that we all thought took the song to a different level. Hopefully the old fans will enjoy the new version.
Money Honey - The true ballad of the record. We always had this song in the back of our minds while the record was coming together. We were never quite sure if it would make the cut but we’re glad it did. There have been several different versions of this song and finally agreeing on one was a great feeling! The song deals with admitting mutual mistakes and knowing you’re a better human being than your past would suggest.
Do It To Me - The first song we worked on with Tim Pagnotta. We had met him at the end of a long trip out to LA. It was during the writing process of this song that we knew he was going to be the perfect fit to record this record. This song is 2/3s romantic 1/3 dream state. It seemed like a perfect fit. I’m particularly fond of the line “we could be in Paris drunk on love and champagne, falling for you faster every sip I take”.
Loud - The last song to make it on the record. We had been jamming in pre-production for over a week and still felt like we were missing another song on the record. Sean had this guitar riff that opens the song and then the rest of the song came together really organically. I think we’d been playing a lot of slower songs that we finally needed to let all of our aggression out. We ended up jamming it a handful of times and then going right in to the studio with it. Definitely some of Joel’s most intense vocal takes. During the bridge we went nuts in the studio banging on whatever we could find to create the most chaos.
